Frederick Gray Murray Collection, 1902.

MS 2005-52 consists of photographs, receipts and business cards. All materials date from 1902 and originate with Frederick Gray Murray and his wife, Janette Stevenson Murray. In 1902, Frederick worked as a physician in the lumber town of Shelldrake, Michigan (located in the Upper Peninsula, on Whitefish Bay). Photographs total two file folders. Many depict scenes of the logging camps and surrounding areas. There images of logs being transported, via big wheel, railroad, and the river. A couple of photographs show activities inside a sawmill. There are also exterior shots of the Shelldrake sawmill and other Shelldrake buildings. One photograph depicts Janette walking on some logs in the river. There is also a photograph of the lighthouse at Whitefish Point. Many receipts document Frederick's purchases from a drug store and a hospital supply company. The collection also includes some addresses and business cards, many offering only a name and location.

Frederick Gray Murray and Janette Stevenson were both born approximately 1874. On June 19, 1902, they married in Waterloo, Iowa. Frederick had just finished a two-year internship at Chicago's Presbyterian Hospital. Now, he was to be a lumber camp doctor for six months in Shelldrake, Michigan. When his service ended, he and Janette returned to Iowa. In November 1902, Frederick established a practice in Cedar Rapids. He continued to practice medicine until his retirement in 1955.
